About Mouth Ulcers
A mouth ulcer is a painful sore in the mouth on either the cheeks or gums. They usually appear red or yellow in colour. Mouth ulcers occur either singly or in clusters, causing a lot of discomfort or pain.
There are two common causes of mouth ulcers. Accidental damage is responsible for many – brushing your teeth too hard, minor burns from hot food and drinks, biting the inside of the mouth accidentally, a tooth that’s become rough, or orthodontic braces or dentures that rub against the gums.
These last for a week or more unless the damage continues happening, in which case they will not disappear until the cause – for example, a rough tooth – is treated.
The other common type is an aphthous ulcer.

How to Use Oralmedic
ORALMEDIC® is hygroscopic ↗ i.e. it seeks out water. By drying the ulcer with a drying stick before treatment, you are removing excess water (e.g. saliva) on the surface of the ulcer, enabling ORALMEDIC® to get straight to work more quickly. ↪ Download the ORALMEDIC® IFU
The following simple points explain how to use ORALMEDIC®:
Dry affected area using the cotton drying bud.
Hold the applicator at arms length, away from the eyes, with coloured ring up. Gently bend the coloured ring to one side until it snaps. ORALMEDIC® will flow to the opposite end.
Apply to the affected area for 5 – 10 seconds. Use a rolling motion to completely cover the entire ulcer bed and ulcer rim. A ‘stinging’ sensation is experienced immediately upon application.
Rinse mouth thoroughly with water and spit out.
The used applicator should be disposed of after it has been thoroughly rinsed with water, or has been carefully wrapped. Dispose of swab in the bin.
How Oralmedic® Works
How does ORALMEDIC® actually work?
ORALMEDIC® contains a patented formulation derived from HYBENX® technology. HYBENX ↗ formulations are selective in removing damaged oral mucosal tissues from the ulcer site after application. ORALMEDIC® works by seeking out¹ and attacking damaged tissue. It then reacts within seconds with the damaged tissue to create a seal or barrier over the site, thus facilitating the healing process and preventing further infection.
Why is ORALMEDIC® so effective?
Conventional treatments (e.g. gels and creams) are applied on top of the affected area to penetrate the damaged tissue before reaching the infected site. ORALMEDIC® extracts water from damaged tissues and creates a seal. This protects the site, preventing contamination and aids the healing process.
¹ Data on file
ORALMEDIC® is a mouth ulcer treatment that alleviates the pain in seconds. Therefore, just seconds after application, ORALMEDIC® relieves the pain and discomfort of a mouth ulcer. Unlike conventional treatments you only need to apply ORALMEDIC® once – just one treatment and the pain is alleviated!
The hygienic cotton bud application system also means that you don’t have to put your finger in your mouth to apply the treatment.
You must make sure that the ulcer is completely covered with ORALMEDIC®. If you can still feel pain after treatment, this is a sign that the ulcer was not completely covered. Use a new treatment stick to re-apply and completely cover the ulcer with ORALMEDIC® one more time only, following the directions above. Thereafter, do not retreat again.
ORALMEDIC® does sting briefly on application – proof that you can really feel it working! This is completely normal and will not last more than a few seconds.
After application, ORALMEDIC® rapidly pulls water out of the upper most layer of tissue. Removing the water ↗ from the tissue changes it so that it is more like a scab, similar to what is found on a skin abrasion. It protects the site and appears as a white eschar, indicating that the product is working.
If you have more than one ulcer in your mouth at any one time, you can use the same treatment to treat more than one ulcer, provided you apply enough of the treatment to each ulcer to cover it completely.
ORALMEDIC® is effective after only one application. If you can still feel pain afterwards, this is an indication that the ulcer was not completely covered. If this is the case, re-apply immediately. However, you should not treat the same ulcer again in a different treatment session, as this will slow down the healing process.
We recommend that ORALMEDIC® should only be used on children aged 12 or over. This is primarily because many children would be more sensitive to the stinging sensation which can be felt upon application.
Mouth ulcers on the tongue can be effectively treated with ORALMEDIC® but they can sometimes be more difficult to treat. Ulcers on the tongue appear to be deeper than those on the oral mucosa, and as such usually require that ORALMEDIC® be applied to the tongue for several seconds longer than if you were treating another surface. It can also be difficult to completely treat an ulcer, particularly in awkward places to reach at the back of the tongue, as the tongue tends to move around.
We have not yet carried out enough studies on pregnant or breast-feeding women to be able to recommend ORALMEDIC® for these people. For this reason, it is better to be on the safe side and not use ORALMEDIC® when pregnant or breastfeeding.
